Freeport Fleetwood Heritage Trail

Freeport Fleetwood Heritage Trail

The trail is made up of a series of artworks created by schools, organisations and groups from the area illustrating the history of the Fylde Coast. You can walk along the the trail and explore the 22 boards to discover more about the the area’s attractions and learn all about Fleetwood’s  fascinating heritage.

Enjoy the fresh sea air as you explore the trail whilst admiring the boats in the marina. The artwork is a permanent fixture and is accessible, free of charge, during the centre’s opening hours.

Subjects covered by the Fleetwood Heritage Trail include the history of the town, the birth of the fishing industry, birds that can be seen in the area, shipwrecks and famous people from Fleetwood.

The boards were created by Cardinal Allen High School, Fleetwood Market, The Fleetwood Weekly News, Fisherman’s Friend, Rossall Primary School, The RNLI and The RSPB. Fleetwood Museum also advised the Freeport Fleetwood team where to find historical information for the boards.

John Magee, Centre Manager at Freeport Fleetwood, said: “The area around Freeport Fleetwood has such a rich and interesting history; we wanted to invest in this art project to celebrate our heritage with the local community.

“We want to say a big thank you to the schools and organisations for giving up their free time and taking part.  The May half term is the perfect opportunity for the public to come for a stroll along the marina and take some time to appreciate what makes Fleetwood great and hopefully learn a thing or two at the same time.”

Members of the Fleetwood Detachment Army Cadets and the Fleetwood Sea Cadets braved some wet weather to help paint the marina fence at Freeport Fleetwood earlier in the year, as part of the shopping centre’s Fleetwood Heritage Trail community outreach project.

Freeports Best Year in Ten!

In 2015 Freeport Fleetwood, the towns Centre, marked twenty years of business iand it was certainly one to celebrate thanks to record sales and footfall.

Best of British Day at Freeport Fleetwood

Sales were 5% ahead of 2014, and total turnover was the highest it’s been for the last 10 years, plus footfall reached almost 1.3m, which was ahead of the previous year for the second year running.

The centre also welcomed three successful new stores Beauty Outlet, Christy and Subway, continuing work started in 2014 to bring new, younger audiences in, as well as continuing to attract existing loyal customers. The three new stores were instant successes and are trading well ahead of expectations.

Three stores were also refurbished; the Rectella store which has been a favourite at the centre for almost 8 years was rebranded as Julian Charles, plus The Works and the London Leathers store which will complete its work later this month. The Works store beat more than 300 other UK branches in the company’s annual store standards competition after being judged on a variety of aspects including sales figures and the atmosphere in the shop.

September saw the return of Best of British, and the focal point for the year’s birthday celebrations. Despite some characteristically bad weather, people flocked to enjoy entertainment including The X Factor’s Carolynne Poole and JonJo Kerr plus giant seagulls, strawberries and cream and massive offers across the centre.

2015 was also a year for accolades for the centre, the team were crowned Retail Business of the Year in the Red Rose Awards and won the Large Retailer award at the Radio Wave Lifestyle and Culture awards. Plus the centre was nominated for the Retail Experience Award in the Lancashire Tourism awards.

John Magee, Centre Manager for Freeport Fleetwood, said; “2015 has been a fantastic year for us at Freeport Fleetwood. I am delighted that we have continued to grow in all areas of the business, building on the success of 2014 to generate our highest turnover for the last ten years. The new store openings have allowed the centre a new dimension and in particular Beauty Outlet and Subway are further reason for the younger shoppers of the Fylde Coast to visit the centre.”

Plans for 2016 are already underway and the centre is looking forward to a partnership with local charity Trinity Hospice, some more big store launches and the introduction of a second entrance which will coincide with the opening of a pedestrian footbridge to connect the new homes at Harbour Village to Anchorage Road.

John continues; “2016 will be the year of the customer and community for us. We have spent the last two years getting to know our fellow businesses, community members and shoppers again and now we would like to give something back to say thank you for their loyalty in helping us thrive. I know the great work of the Trinity Hospice is invaluable to our community so we have decided to support them as our charity in 2016. Look out for our first fundraising activity soon.”

A Splash of Australia comes to Freeport this Summer

Childhood nostalgia is on its way to Freeport Fleetwood in the form of an interactive puddle - the first of its kind to come to the UK. The centre has taken the plunge this summer with two interactive puddles designed by Australian artist Anna Crane.

Trinity Hospice volunteers in the Freeport puddle
Trinity Hospice volunteers jump into Anna Crane's interactive puddles, at Freeport Fleetwood

The bespoke sensory artwork was created using a complex team of mixed design disciplines to create the illusion of water. The puddle uses motion sensors to activate interactive sounds and smells, creating an association with memories from childhood for adult visitors.

The centre has chosen the smell of bubblegum within the design to trigger memories of splashing in puddles and chewing gum as a child. The sound of water is set to transform the urban setting of the centre into an oasis of blue calm. The interactive elements of the design will appeal to children of all ages, making this a fun and welcome attraction at the centre.

Australian artist Anna Crane chose Freeport Fleetwood for her first UK commissioned design. You can see her puddles here.

Anna said: “Since arriving in the UK in September 2014 I have been actively pursuing the public art scene, but my real passion lies in shopping centres and public spaces. This is an unusual, passive artwork that comes to life when interacted with, catapulting the user into the presence and allowing the conscious brain to explore the artwork using only basic primal senses. I am so excited to work with a centre where our core beliefs align for my first commissioned UK design, and it's great to see the puddle come to life once more.”

See the puddle at Freeport in action here

Freeport Fleetwood is also doing a second art project with Anna this summer, named Squares. Squares is a growing artwork created with the help of Freeport visitors that will morph and change as visitors add to it, allowing customers to see the progression of the art with each visit to the centre. Squared is sited outside Next near the playground, and will also raise donations for both Trinity and Brian House.

John Magee, Manager at the centre said: “Summer is a time for fun and we’re so excited to display two incredible pieces of interactive art for both children and adults to enjoy. We are immensely proud that Anna has chosen our centre as her first project outside of Australia, and we can’t wait to debut all of her hard work this summer!”

Both pieces launched officially on Saturday 30th July and will be in place throughout August, giving customers all day entertainment for a whole month.

New Car Valeting Centre open at Freeport Fleetwood

Shoppers at Freeport Fleetwood can give their cars a makeover as well as their wardrobe, as a new ProWash Car Valeting Centre is now open at the Outlet Centre.

The ProWash Car Valeting business was set up just under two years ago by Fleetwood High School friends Ben Pitches and James Eccleshare and was built entirely from scratch, with the pair not paying themselves a wage over the past 18 months. The original site, based in Thornton, fell victim to an arson attack back in April and was damaged in the blaze. It is now back up and running, but this new site opening means a fresh new start for the pair.

The new centre at Freeport Fleetwood offers a range of services from buffing, polishing and waxing to carpet upholstery and body restoration. A team of four (including Ben and James) are working at the new site offering the highest quality of service to Freeport’s shoppers.

Charity Car Painting Raises Funds for Trinity

Painted car at Freeport Fleetwood charity day

Local children in Fleetwood have raised a total of £437.39 for the Brian House Children’s Hospice by taking part in a fundraising car painting project at Freeport Fleetwood Shopping Centre.

The unused car was set up in the middle of the shopping centre on Saturday 16th April and shoppers were invited to let their children’s imaginations run wild by having a go at painting the vehicle.

Young shoppers were also invited to get their hands dirty by making foam clay bisque pots, patchwork wall hangings and square tiles. All the activities were free, but customers were asked to make a £1 donation to Freeport Fleetwood’s charity partner Brian House Children’s Hospice in order for their baby Banksys to have a go at painting the car.

The car painting project was set up by Freeport Fleetwood as part of the Centre’s exciting programme of Easter Holiday craft activities, organised in partnership with Glazey Days, a Fleetwood-based pottery and painting studio. The car itself was kindly donated by the local Fleetwood scrapyard, Foulds Metals Ltd.

Centre Manager, John Magee said: “We’d like to thank everyone who got involved in the car painting project over the Easter holidays. The little ones who took part have helped to raise an amazing amount of money for the Trinity Hospice and the children’s hospice Brian House and it was fantastic to see them having so much fun.”

All donations made from Freeport Fleetwood’s Easter Holiday activities will go to the centre’s 2016 charity partner, Trinity Hospice. The shopping centre is also currently selling a range of limited edition #CareForLife shopping bags designed by students from Flakefleet Primary School. The bags cost £2 and all funds will be donated to the charity.

One Lucky Gent Wins a Skopes Makeover

Shopping Outlet Freeport Fleetwood gives one man the a-list treatment with their Modernise Your Man competition.

Skopes competition winner at Freeport Fleetwood

The women of the Fylde Coast have spoken, and Freeport Fleetwood answered: the shopping outlet has successfully catapulted one lucky fella into the 21st century with their latest competition, Modernise your Man.

Skopes menswear store ran the competition to offer one lucky lady the chance to win a free styling session for a man in her life. As well as receiving expert advice from their in-store menswear fashion stylists, the winner also won two outfits from the store: one casual outfit for everyday use, and one tailored suit for special occasions. As the go-to for stylish men in the area, Skopes was the obvious place to take the winning gent.

Sian Darlow submitted the winning entry, on behalf of her husband Paul Darlow. The lovely local lady entered the competition as a thank you to Paul for being so supportive during the completion of her teacher training course at University. Sian has been working towards her degree whilst Paul had also been studying, working, and helping to raise their two young boys together. While he excelled in the husband department, his uniform of baggy sportswear meant his wardrobe could definitely benefit from the addition of a few sharp suits. With Sian’s graduation ceremony coming up, Paul wanted to dress to impress on the special day.

Paul spent the day with Sian at Skopes being measured, advised, and waited on hand and foot to choose a suit the couple were both happy with. Paul walked away with a navy fitted suit, accompanied with a cool blue hairline stripe shirt, and fuchsia knitted tie. The look was completed with a patterned salmon pocket square to add an extra touch of suaveness. For his casual outfit Paul chose a stone-coloured striped jacket, a long sleeved blue and white stripe shirt, vibrant pocket square and casual jeans for a smart day-to-day look.

Sian Darlow said: “Paul always bought himself clothes before we had our children, but since we had our boys he hasn’t really treated himself, so this was a real treat for both of us. I am so grateful to Paul for all of his support during my studies and this is my way of saying thank you and to get us both ready for my graduation.”

John Magee, Centre Manager for Freeport Fleetwood, said: “We’ve never run a competition before where a stylish man on your arm is the prize! Paul looked really dapper after his Skopes makeover and we hope Sian will enjoy her graduation even more having a super-smart husband by her side”

Established over 60 years ago in the heart of the textile industry, Skopes offers a full range of quality tailoring, casual wear and accessories. The Skopes collections include a wide variety of mix & match suits, jackets, blazers, evening wear and trousers to suit all budgets. The latest collections continue Skopes’ tradition of utilising good quality fabrics superbly tailored with great attention to detail.

The Store Manager for Skopes, Stuart, said: “Working with Paul was great, he was really keen to try some new looks and was really pleased with the two outfits we put together for him.”

Bag a Bespoke Bag for Life Design at Freeport Fleetwood

Lancashire schools have teamed up with Freeport Fleetwood Outlet Centre to create a limited edition shopping bag as part of the Centre’s #CAREFORLIFE campaign to raise money for Trinity Hospice.

Bag for Life Design, for Trinity from Freeport Fleetwood

Students in Fleetwood were invited to showcase their creativity by submitting designs to be printed on the limited edition charity bags, which in turn will be sold at the Outlet Centre to raise money for Trinity Hospice. The school children were asked to create designs inspired by the theme of ‘caring’.

The Freeport Fleetwood Centre management team received a number of wonderful designs from students at local schools including: Shakespeare Primary School, Charles Saer Community Primary School, Flakefleet Primary School and Fleetwood High School. The standard was extremely high, but there could only be one winner.

The winning entry came from three talented students at Flakefleet Primary School. The winners, Holly May Frith (age 9), Keelan Burder (age 9) and Millie Nunn-Barnett (age 10), created a bright and bold yet thoughtful design, showing a heart with ‘helping hands’ reaching out to it. There was a lot of personal motivation behind the design as Trinity Hospice is a charity close to their hearts.

John Magee, Manager at the centre said: “We wanted to launch the #CareForLife campaign to support Trinity Hospice as part of our year-long plan to make 2016 the year of giving back to the community.

We are delighted with the response from the local schools and we want to say a big thank you to everyone who took part. We received so many fabulous designs that it was really difficult to pick only one, but the entry from Flakefleet Primary school had a beautiful sentiment behind it and is a worthy winner.”

Karen Pratt, Family Learning Mentor at Flakefleet Primary School, said: “When we heard about the #CareForLife campaign we immediately wanted to get involved as Trinity Hospice is a local charity to us. Caring for others is an important value that we bring into the classroom and Holly, Keelan and Millie have all done a great job at using art to portray it. We can't wait to see the finished bags."

The limited edition #CareForLife shopping bags cost £2 and will be sold at Freeport Fleetwood Outlet Centre from Monday 11th April. All funds will be donated to the Trinity Hospice.

Pop-Up Shop Raises over £3000 for Trinity Hospice

With the help of generous shoppers, Freeport Fleetwood raised £3151 just over two days on 30th and 31st January, thanks to their Trinity Hospice pop up shop.

Trinity Hospice pop-up shop at Freeport Fleetwood

The event marked the first of many planned for 2016 to showcase Trinity Hospice and all the services which the charity offers to patients and families. Across the weekend shoppers were welcomed with an extravagant balloon arch, stilt walkers and BBC Radio Lancashire broadcasting its daily breakfast show live from the centre.

The shop sold products from the charity’s 15 shops across the region and welcomed 60 donation bags from shoppers and employees, including unwanted clothes and Christmas gifts.

The shop raised over £1532 in retail sales for Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice. Not only was stock flying out the door but the shop also managed to sign up 25 supporters for the charity’s weekly lottery, worth £1,300 to the organisation over 12 months, and generous shoppers also gave £319 in direct financial donations.

The first 500 people to pledge their support to the Trinity 2016 fundraising events in the shop received a free re-useable canvas tote bag, which was specially designed for the partnership.

Centre Manager John Magee says: “The pop up was a great success and we’re so pleased with the amount we managed to raise! It was great to see so many people visiting the centre and getting involved in supporting both ourselves and Trinity Hospice. The re-useable canvas tote bags were such a success that Hospice staff seized another opportunity to raise money and started to sell them too!”

The Outlet Centre plans to make 2016 its best yet by giving back to the community with a year-long calendar of activity to support Trinity Hospice.

Shoppers over the weekend also had the opportunity to sign up for upcoming events such as the Illumanthon, Colour Splash or the Santa Dash.

Donate to 'Mission Christmas' with Freeport Fleetwood

Freeport Fleetwood is inviting customers to spread the festive spirit this Christmas by donating gifts to radio station Rock FM's Cash for Kids charity.

The campaign, targeted at disadvantaged children across the region, aims to ensure no child wakes up on Christmas morning without a present.

Christmas presents

From 16th November shoppers will be able to drop new and unused gifts into any of the designated Mission Christmas stations across the centre.

Or, you can donate cash into one of the many collection boxes. All gifts are graciously welcomed and will be given to children and teenagers up to 18 years-old. Examples of items requested in previous years include toys, children’s clothes, chocolate, beauty sets and sportswear.

Christmas is a magical time of year and that should be the case for all children. Picking up an extra stocking filler when you’re doing your shopping takes little effort but can make a world of difference to the disadvantaged youths in our community on Christmas morning.

With a jam packed Christmas schedule, including an exciting Christmas lights switch-on on Thursday 19th November, Freeport Fleetwood is on track to welcome thousands of eager shoppers through its doors this season. Centre Manager John Magee thinks its involvement in Mission Christmas will only add to the festivities and create even more of a buzz:

“We’re so pleased to be partnering with Rock FM on this worthwhile campaign. Christmas is our favourite time of year by far; there’s such a fun, festive atmosphere around the centre and it is transformed with sparkly lights, decorations, trees and mulled wine. But in all the madness and chaos of the season it’s nice to take a moment to think about families in our community who might not have as much to look forward to this Christmas. By picking up an extra gift at the till point, our shoppers will be doing their bit to spread some cheer to those who need it the most. Plus who can resist that warm, fuzzy feeling you get with Christmas gift giving?”

Anyone wishing to donate should drop their unused, unwrapped gifts off at Freeport Fleetwood after the 16th November 2015. The centre will be running a series of festive activities in the run up to Christmas and should stay tuned to Facebook and Twitter for updates.
