Tasty Campaign to Revive Retro Recipes at Freeport Fleetwood

This week Freeport Fleetwood has started a campaign to urge food lovers, amateur cooks and historians to find the forgotten foods of Lancashire in a bid to celebrate and document the region’s culinary heritage.

Freeport Fleetwood is launching the campaign to find the forgotten recipes, dishes and foods that make up the identity of the Lancashire region. Talk to your elderly relatives, scour bookshelves for family cookery books and to think back to the dishes your mums used to make.

We're trying to encourage people to reconnect with the food of their forefathers, to protect the region’s heritage and to help people to better understand where their food comes from.

To enter a recipe go to the Freeport Fleetwood Facebook page or email them to freeportfleetwood@downatthesocial.co.uk.

The deadline for entry is 1 December 2014. The top 30 recipes will be chosen by North West food experts and be used to create a free online resource that will be circulated throughout the region.

Try the best dishes out!

Freeport Fleetwood will be holding a cookery demonstration and recipe tasting of the top five dishes at the centre on Thursday 4 December from 4-8pm. Come along on the evening, taste the dishes for free and chat to our chef about your food experiences. There will also be mulled wine to keep the winter chills at bay.

John Magee, Centre Manager at Freeport Fleetwood, said, “We want to take the time to document the rich food heritage of Lancashire and encourage people to think about their culinary heritage.

“We hope this campaign pushes people to revive the recipes their parents and grandparents used to make. The more important the recipe is to your family, the better. Is there a type of pastry from Poulton that hasn’t been seen for seventy years, is someone still serving frumenty, or is there a oatcake from Lancaster that only one bakery is still making?

“Our centre is firmly rooted in the heart of our community and we want to celebrate that by working with local people to document our multi-cultural culinary heritage. Let’s celebrate the culinary delights of the region and put Lancashire back on the gastronomic map.”

Regatta Relaunches at Freeport Fleetwood

New Look Regatta at Freeport Fleetwood

It's been a pleasure to enjoy this recent Indian Summer as September has so far been a lovely month, but everyone who spends time at the coast knows that the blustery and rainy weather of autumn and winter will be lurking just around the corner - and it's all made that mush easier to cope with if you've got a good selection of suitable clothing to keep you warm and dry!

So you can understand why outdoorsy shoppers in Lancashire flocked to the newly revamped Regatta store at Freeport Fleetwood to stock up in the refreshed store which has new shopping areas, a new footwear wall, and a wider selection of Regatta lines when it opened its doors on 31 August.

The leisure wear giant has been part of the popular Freeport Fleetwood complex since it opened in 1995 and to celebrate continuing success, they completely refurbished the store.

There's a range of amazing deals and discounts to celebrate the relaunch. You can choose from heavily reduced items such as Deakin (RRP £25), Jenna (RRP £20) and Brennen shirts (RRP £20) at £15 for two. Or buy Thompson and Sweethart zip neck fleeces at £10 for two (RRP £20 each) or the Cathie and Hedman full zip fleeces £15 for two (RRP £28 each). Matthews and Midsummer water proof jackets (RRP £50) are now available at £14.99.

Regatta’s Head of Retail Stores, Chris Dransfield, said he hoped customers would continue to enjoy visiting the new store.

As he explained: “In line with the Regatta rebrand for autumn/winter we felt this was the perfect time to refresh our Fleetwood store and create some real shopping interest for our customers. We are delighted with how the new store looks, it shows the breadth of our ranges and we can continue to offer our customers some really great deals on Regatta products in a fantastic new shopping environment."

Speaking about the launch, John Magee, Centre Manager at Freeport Fleetwood, added: “Our customers at Freeport Fleetwood are an active bunch and our updated Regatta store has clearly helped to drive sales. Not only do we have a Regatta store but also a Mountain Warehouse and Trespass. If you’re into canoeing, climbing or skiing, we’ve got the specialist outfit for you, and of course plenty for the seaside weather.”

There are 700 free car parking spaces and more than 45 stores at Freeport Fleetwood and it's a popular spot where you can find your favourite brands with up to 60% off RRP. Make a day of it and have a drink or bite to eat with plenty of cafes including the friendly Costa Coffee, with a range of hot and cold drinks on offer.

Freeport Fleetwood supports children’s charity

Retailers at Freeport Fleetwood shopping centre have rallied around to donate a range of homewares to equip a temporary home for the injured charity champion, Sue Hayward.

Children of Watamu

Freeport Fleetwood stores have donated gifts for former Blackpool hotelier, Sue, founder of Children of Watamu, who is now ‘Mama Sue’ to 85 orphaned, abandoned, or neglected kids at her Happy House children’s home on the Indian ocean coast of Kenya.

Sue and her husband, Dave, have been forced to return to the UK for urgent medical treatment after fracturing her leg in five places. The charity’s UK voluntary organiser, Elizabeth Gomm, contacted the shopping centre for help whilst trying to find, furnish and equip a ground floor flat within a week.

Freeport Fleetwood has close connections with the Children of Watamu charity and Centre Manager, John Magee, sponsors Kennedy, a Danwata scholarship student aged 14 years old.

Stores at Freeport Fleetwood donated many items including furniture, electricals and cleaning products from Care Facilities Management, the centre’s cleaning contractor, candles from Hallmark, bedding and curtains from Rectella, cushions from Room, kitchen utensils from Pro Cook and home wares from Home Bargains. The centre also donated a £100 gift card.

John Magee, Centre Manager at Freeport Fleetwood, said: “As a centre we are committed to helping the Kenyan charity, the Children of Watamu. When Elizabeth got in touch and asked if we could help Sue settle into the UK whilst having treatment, I knew all our generous retailers would help.

“The charity is responsible for so much meaningful work in Kenya. They opened the Happy House giving a home and family to a growing number of children who have suffered from dire poverty, neglect, loss or abuse.”

Elizabeth Gomm, Happy House UK organiser , said: “Freeport Fleetwood has been incredibly generous and fully kitted out Sue’s flat in the space of a week. We’re very grateful for their support and hope Sue’s treatment is speedy and she gets back to our Happy House family and continues her inspirational work.”

The outlet centre offers a wide choice of fashion, homewares, fragrances, accessories and gift ideas from designer and high street stores including Moss, M&S Outlet, Jeff Banks and GAP Outlet. There is a wealth of locations in which to refuel too – whether it’s a light bite at Costa Coffee or a laid-back lunch in the Bay Tea Rooms. Late night shopping is also available every Thursday until 8pm.

McDonalds at Freeport during the Drive-thru Challenge

The Harbour Village eatery went to head-to-head with McDonald’s branches across the country in an attempt to set a new National Drive Thru Record. The restaurant was aiming to serve more vehicles in one hour than any other in the country, during a double record attempt from 12pm on Monday 5 May, and to help their cause they were giving away free McChicken sandwiches to people who took part.

Adam Curnow, Business Manager at McDonald’s, said: “The restaurant normally serves 130 cars per hour at weekends so we’re going to have our work cut out during the record challenge.

"The team didn't manage to break the existing national record of 232, but they set a new record for the Northern region of 206 served in an hour. They served 183 in their second hour/attempt. The previous record stood at 148 so we're really pleased with our success!"
