Blackpool Airshow 2017

Blackpool’s breath-taking Air Show in 2017

Blackpool Airshow is an iconic FREE event in the calendar!

There's been an airshow in Blackpool for more than 100 years and it's one of the longest running ones in the world.

The first major airshow was held at Blackpool Airport in 1909 when 2000 spectators watched the most primitive planes perform their routine.

Blackpool Air Show 2017 is Ready for Take Off

Blackpool’s breath-taking Air Show is back for 2017 and looks set to be better than ever!

The spectacular free event will take place on Blackpool Promenade on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August and for the first time includes the Red Arrows on both days.

The programme will showcase the very best in British aviation with a whole host of amazing flying machines and some of the country’s most talented pilots.

The programme will begin shortly after 1.30pm on both days, with the best viewing points on the promenade between North and Central Piers.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which features a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber, will take part in a hugely patriotic display. Crowds will also be able to see an RAF Typhoon thunder across the horizon; see spectacular aerobatic displays from Team Twister, the Huey Helicopter and Team Trig as they perform their own versions of aerial ballet with exhilarating sequences of loops and rolls.

The RAF Red Arrows will conclude the display each day with their own display of aerial control, speed and synergy.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “This year marks the 108th annual Blackpool Air Show and I have absolutely no doubt it will be as grand as ever.

“The line-up looks superb and it’s fantastic that we have the Red Arrows here performing over two consecutive days. It is an event for the family to enjoy and we hope to encourage more people to come along and stay for the two days and enjoy all that the Air Show and Blackpool has to offer.”

You are encouraged to arrive in resort early to avoid any queues.

To complement the aerial programme, there is also plenty to see and do on the ground before the show starts with a whole range of stalls, stands and concessions including the Red Arrows ground team; the SPAM roadshow; Arnold Clark; Simulator Supplies; 21 Game Stall; Help for Heroes; Friends of the Red Arrows; Royal British Legion; Blackpool Transport; RAFA; Love My Beach and Blood Bikes.

In addition, there will be a fantastic selection of food and drink concessions including The Nag’s Head serving hot and cold beverages; Shake’n’Smooth for delicious smoothies, shakes and waffles, plus lots more to be announced.

Blackpool has been wowing the public since 1909 when the town put on the very first official air show in Britain. That was the same year French flyer Louis Bleriot made the first historic crossing of the English Channel.

The official Air Show programme will be available to purchase on the day from the VisitBlackpool stand in the main Air Show village or from the VisitBlackpool Tourist Information Centre located at Festival House opposite Blackpool Tower.

Please note that the programme is potentially subject to change due to both aircraft availability and weather conditions.

It is the first time that the Red Arrows will feature on consecutive days of a Blackpool Air Show and this has been made possible through the switching of the free event to a Saturday and Sunday, rather than a Sunday and Monday as in previous years.

The RAF Typhoon display team and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are also confirmed for both days of this year’s show.

The programme will also feature a whole host of incredible flying machines with details to be confirmed in coming weeks.

The full line-up for the Blackpool Air Show will be revealed in due course.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, featuring a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber, took centre stage in an extremely patriotic programme, with the RAF Red Arrows concluding the Sunday display with their own amazing display of aerial control, speed and synergy.

Incredibly, 2016 marked the 107th annual Blackpool Air Show, making it one of the longest running air shows in the world.

As well as a range of spectacular displays, there were a whole range of exciting sights on the ground with stalls, stands and attractions from the friends of the Red Arrows, Simulator Supplies, Flyzone, Battle of Britain, SPAM and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Blackpool has been wowing the public since 1909 when the town put on the very first official air show in Britain in the same year that French flyer Louis Bleriot made the first historic crossing of the English Channel.

Last chance to see the famous Vulcan in the North West

One of the world’s most popular aircraft, Vulcan XH558, made its final ever appearance in the North West at Blackpool Air Show in 2015.

The final remaining Vulcan was in her final flying season before being retired after a remarkable career which saw the plane play a key role both during the conflict in the Falklands and during the Cold War.

And to celebrate the crew, led by Martin Withers who captained Vulcan XM607 on the famous Black Buck mission during the Falklands conflict, launched a dramatic new display routine.

Returned to the skies in 2007 following what is now believed to be the most ambitious technical restoration programme ever undertaken, Vulcan XH558 was operated by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST).

The charity had been raising more than £2 million each year to service and operate the aircraft, which is based at Robin Hood Airport.

VTST Chief Executive, Dr Robert Pleming, said: “If you didn’t see her last season, there will be no more opportunities to hear a Vulcan’s spine-tingling howl as she climbs high into the sky for another dramatic display, or to see her rolling onto her side to reveal her giant delta silhouette.

“It is highly gratifying that the aircraft made a return appearance to the Blackpool Air Show, where she has attracted huge crowds and been given an incredible welcome in her previous visits to this world famous resort with its incredible promenade and golden sands.

“She was among many iconic aircraft and in highly distinguished company; however, it is very sad that this was the last time she performed her spectacular display with the stunning backdrop of Blackpool Tower and over the Irish Sea.”
