Poco Loco Samba Band

Poco Loco is a community band. Local residents of all ages are welcome, with or without any previous experience or skills in making music. An ability to read music is not necessary and all musical instruments are supplied. All you need is a sense of rhythm.

We each pay a weekly subscription, with a lower rate for junior and unwaged members.

Poco Loco performs at a variety of events in the Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde area. The band also attends events across the North-West of England, including many school and community workshops. See the band leading the parade at Fleetwood Tram Sunday 2019 –

Poco Loco’s story

Poco Loco formed in March 2000, originally to perform as part of the BBC Music Live event over May Bank Holiday weekend.

Since then the band has performed in many carnival processions. At countless public events and galas, and in many schools and youth clubs. Poco Loco has also regularly busked on the streets of several north-west towns.

Hundreds of people have joined in workshops and felt the joy of playing samba rhythms. Many, many band members (of all ages – from 6 to 90!) have come and gone.

We like to think of ourselves as a ‘family’. New members have been regularly welcomed, and we bid fond farewells as people leave the band when their lives move on. We have learned and performed plenty of Brazilian-based samba rhythms.

Health benefits

We have long known intuitively about the health benefits of drumming. But now it’s official – and a compelling reason for you to join the band!

Research by the Royal College of Music found that drumming has a positive impact on mental health. A 10-week programme of group drumming can reduce depression by as much as 38% and anxiety by 20%. To read the full article, please click here.
