We all love to look around a market, especially when we’re on holiday, they have an atmosphere all of their own! There’s a few good ones right here on the Fylde Coast. Bonny Street Market was one of them – and the good news is that it’s BACK for 2026!
It’s reopening on March 27 – that’s Easter 2026, operated by the Cubbins family once again. They’d operated a small funfair on the site before the original market opened in 1985.
And when it reopens it’s going to be a super-deluxe market! With robust shipping containers brought onto site and converted into units, and a uniform blue and red colour scheme. Each one has a secure roller shutter and an overhang to deflect the rain! Along with new signage across the site it looks ship-shape and ready for the traders.

About 80% of the original traders will be back, and, thanks to Nancy, there’s a new cafe coming too. You’ll recognise her face – she used to have the cafe on North Pier! If you fancy trying your hand at a stall on the market, just email savannahord@gmail.com for details.

Bonny Street Market v1
Bonny Street Market was Blackpool’s largest open air market, with 75 stalls and something for everyone. Slightly protected from the weather by surrounding buildings, sandwiched between Bonny Street (the road along the back of Sea Life and the amusements) and Central Car Park.

A packed toy stall welcomed you into the market’s main entrance. Ladies, gents and children’s clothes. Fancy goods, homewares, gifts, bags, music and much more. With stalls packed tightly together, music playing and people chatting and laughing, it had a great atmosphere, especially on a sunny day! It was open daily throughout the season, from Easter to the end of autumn half-term in November.
The Closure of Bonny Street Market v1…
Matt Hughes operated this popular attraction from 1985 until it’s closure. The original intention was for it to close permanently in January 2022, and on 27.1.22 the operators posted on Facebook “It’s with regret we have to write this post. Sadly after 36 seasons we have had to close due to circumstances beyond our control. Unfortunately our site is being developed, along with the surrounding area, into a new leisure development. So its with a heavy heart that we say a big thankyou and goodbye to all of our customers that have supported us over the past 36 years.”
However, the market continued trading to the end of the 2022 season. It closed as promised at the end of the autumn half-term holidays. With all the stalls emptied, by Christmas dismantling was in full swing. By January 2023 most of the site was clear.
…which turned out to be a bad move!
The Market was closed for good in November 2022 to make way for the Blackpool Central project. The site was briefly a site compound for the company building the multi-storey car park. Sadly the long anticipated, major Blackpool Central project became derailed when Nikal, the developer, went into administration in 2024. Only the enabling works were completed, including the new multi-storey car park towards the rear of the site, close to Central Drive. More about Blackpool Central here
We went to take one last look around Bonny Street Market on Monday 17 October 2022 before it closed for good…

So sad to see bonny st market go lve been going to it for 36 years twice a year people so friendly enjoyed going round all the stalls big part of blackpool going xx
The irony is – that market is tiny in the first place. Cant they just build around it ? Where else are you going to hear someone randomly playing Percy Faith And His Orchestra – ‘Theme From A Summer Place’ ? All that history, atmosphere and long standing friendships made . . to be replaced by a SHITE characterless car park !
What do they need to close Bonny St Market?, it only takes p a small piece of land surely to God the bloody council can leave it alone, after all it brings in revenue to the town. Your losing an asset Blackpool. ?
Chariots Of The Gods is a flawed concept, having witnessed a UFO myself hovering over a chemical plant in Trafford Park in 1999 i too thought we must be being visited by aliens. It was only as a christian that i found out that Jesus, Mary & some of the saints had appeared to the visionary Veronica at Bayside USA (1970-94) amongst other things she was told about the end times we are living through was that Satan & his cohorts were flying these craft around to trick mankind into believing aliens exist, they don’t. There were many miracles performed there during the period to authenticate their appearances.
Loved going there for gifts and generally buying shite to give to people when we got back …it had a good wee vibe , and the guy selling the hot donuts was awrite ❤??
Going to miss bonny street market always went to it 2 or 3times when we visited Blackpool sorry it is closing was part of Blackpool
