A sad day for Blackpool ☹️

On 10 June 2022 the Sandcastle Waterpark waved goodbye to Managing Director John Child. He’s been at the helm for a whopping 25 years, having worked there for 36 – a whole career lifetime.

It marks the start of a new chapter at the popular Blackpool attraction – known well for its accessibility under John’s leadership. Sandcastle has spearheaded access for all and environmentally sound business practices. Proving that you can run a business in an ethical way.

We went along to Johns leaving do to say goodbye and catch a short interview before he left. Of course we also took the chance to catch a peep inside the quiet and closed venue while we were there. Good luck John!

Fun at the Waterpark

Come with us and see how the team safely reopened Sandcastle Waterpark Blackpool after the pandemic. We went to the media preview to see the lengths they went to to give you a safe and enjoyable experience. Many of these post-covid changes are still in place today, because they made for a much better experience!

In our Blackpool Sandcastle water park vlog, we take you on a guided tour from the door. See inside the changing rooms where £100k has been spent on improving facilities and creating a new shower block. Take a walk around the pool side, where we get wet with the Sandcastle Master Blaster!

One thing to remember is that you must now book online in advance for your 3 hour session. Capacity is 1/3 that it was. Which means you can now plan ahead and book for guaranteed admission! There’s a lot less queueing to get in the building, and hardly any queueing to enjoy the rides. Spend your time having fun, rather than waiting in line! Take a look at their website, with all the information you need to plan your visit.

The wildest, wettest water slides!

With over 18 slides and attractions, in an 84 degree climate, it’s also the UK’s largest indoor waterpark, with water slides, fun pools, wave machine, lazy river and water chutes. Whether you swim like a water baby or paddle like a duck there’s something to suit everyone. The place is huge!

  • From the white knuckle thrills of the Master Blaster – the longest Indoor roller coaster waterslide in the world to Aztec Falls, Montazooma and the Sidewinder, we’ve got the wildest, wettest water slides around.
  • Families can enjoy our Thunder Falls Slides, Typhoon Lagoon wave pool, Ushi Gushi action river and Treetops Water Chutes amongst others
  • The little ones will have plenty of fun in Shimmerin Shallows, aboard HMS Thundersplash and Fort Riptide and sliding down the Tree Tops Water Chutes.

With a selection of great catering and retail outlets, it really is the perfect place to spend a day. It’s pretty much a guarantee that it’ll be warmer than anywhere else around – at a constant 84 degrees.

Accessible & Responsible

Sandcastle Waterpark is an incredibly thoughtful attraction. They’ve helped disadvantaged and disabled people so much over the years. Running a responsible business is high on their list of priorities.

Under normal circumstances (before Covid-19) Accessible Family evenings were held regularly. Not only are these events a great opportunity for young people with disabilities, they also raise a great deal of money for charity. We’re sure that they will be back again, just as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Green Key Award

Sandcastle Waterpark was first to get a Green Key award for high environmental standards. It’s an international standard for the tourism industry, operating in 65 countries globally. The eco-label represents a commitment that tourism establishments adhere to a strict criteria.

More about the Green Key Award here

They’ve worked hard at Sandcastle to make sure that the attraction is run responsibly and accessible to everyone. From a Changing Places toilet to a quiet room, they always go the extra mile.

Changing Places People’s Choice

Sandcastle Waterpark Blackpool is delighted to be awarded the Changing Places People’s Choice Award. For the most popular Changing Places Toilet Facilities in the UK, from more than 1100 facility providers.

Then MD John Child said, “We are proud and delighted to receive this award which has been voted for by members of the public. We are a business that wholeheartedly supports Changing Places as they strive for every town in the UK to provide this facility.

“Since our initial investment in 2013 as part of our access for all programme, we are delighted that this facility has helped increase visits from our disabled guests by 330%. As a resort, Blackpool has more Changing Place facilities than any other in the UK and we are confident of more being introduced in the future.”

Disabled Friendly

John added “Thousands of people need Changing Places facilities to enable them to get out and about and enjoy the day-to-day activities many of us take for granted. We want more and more visitors to Blackpool to know that our facility is here for them to use, not just guests of Sandcastle Waterpark. It’s open to anyone in and around the Blackpool area.

“The facility includes a ceiling hoist, adult sized adjustable bench, peninsular toilet, adjustable wash basin and non slip floor amongst others.”

The Changing Places Consortium launched its campaign in 2006 on behalf of the 1/4 of a million people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. This includes people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, as well as older people.

Sandcastle Waterpark is the UK’s largest Indoor Waterpark. In 2018 it was awarded a World Waterpark Association Special Recognition Award for it’s Inclusive Programming, won the Inclusive Tourism Award at the Lancashire Tourism Awards and it’s Changing Place Toilet was voted the UK’s favourite Changing Place Facility.
