Look Inside the Winter Gardens

Covid played havoc with everything, but the Winter Gardens has been fabulous again, since reopening in May 2021. We went for a look behind the scenes a few days before re-opening, to see how preparations were going –

Visit popular Mazzei Café – packages including Afternoon tea are available to pre-book on the venue’s website. The Old Victoria Bar, formally Gillow’s, features live entertainment throughout the day. Enjoy a wide selection of drinks and classic pub food.

The Box Office counter service at Church Street is where you can book in person. It’s open daily from 11am – 3pm.

Join a fascinating tour of the Winter Gardens Blackpool. The knowledgeable guides have many years’ experience at the venue and will give you a unique insight to the fascinating building and the many events its hosted. These tours are one of the best ways to re-live the history of the venue and visit backstage areas not often open to the public.

Visit backstage of the Opera House and get a chance to tread the boards so many famous faces have walked on before. The grandeur of the Empress Ballroom will be explored. And the refurbished Spanish Suites offer a unique insight into Blackpool’s largest entertainment venue.

Venue Tour admission price includes a tea or coffee in the Mazzei Cafe following the tour. Options are available to upgrade to include a traditional Afternoon Tea or with Fizz in the stunning Mazzei Cafe after your tour. Please note the Winter Gardens is a working building and access cannot be guaranteed to all areas.



Schools Alive 2023 – 6-10 Feb at 7pm

Blackpool Music Service presents their 20th annual Schools Alive event with children participating from Blackpool schools and surrounding areas.

Schools Alive 2023 is an opportunity for schools to celebrate live music-making. Each performance will enhance our appreciation of your childrens’ ability to perform music, drama and dance. Such performances will improve our childrens personal confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, support for each other and enjoyment of life.

Every school performance is prepared by creative, inspired school teachers, supportive parents and theatre based support but it is our enthusiastic children who then provide us with a great week of entertainment.

After a successful event in 2022, this exclusive one day event will return to the (world famous) Winter Gardens on the 25 February 2023.

The event celebrates our love of the Back to the Future trilogy and gives fans the opportunity to experience: large fan made set builds, props, and replica vehicles, as seen in the films.

On Monday 6th March over 400 children will take part in “A Celebration of Music” now in its 14th year. This wonderful community event, is now a huge spectacle, showcasing music in schools. Blackpool Dance Festival – 25 May to 2 June

The Blackpool Dance Festival began in 1920 in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

Covering a period of thirteen days, it’s by far the largest of the five festivals held in Blackpool. The Festival covers Ballroom and Latin American dancing, incorporating the British Open Championships for Adult Amateur and Professional couples, plus Formation Teams.

2005 saw the introduction of two new events, the British Rising Star Amateur Ballroom and Latin Competitions. 2019 was the event’s 94th year and there were 56 countries represented, with a total number of 2,827 entries in the 13 events!

This breathtaking recreation of a live Tina Turner concert celebrates the golden anniversary of the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll’s signature tune Proud Mary. Tina’s no-holds-barred take of the song established a reputation for fearsome live performances – and those never-ending legs!

Rebellion Festival – 3-6 Aug

Rebellion Festivals is the largest INDEPENDENT Punk / Alternative music festival in the world. Over 4 days every August in Blackpool, the very best in Punk gather for the social event of the year. Many treat it as a main holiday and come every year so there is a very familiar feel to the weekend and it’s like one big family – all 4000 of us! All forms of punk are represented with Anarcho bands playing alongside ’77 Punks groups on the same bill as Oi bands sharing the same stage as UK82 style bands who are appearing with Street Punk outfits next to the new breed of young punk bands coming through etc etc…..! We also have an acoustic stage and an alternative stage BIZARRE BAZAAR which has comedy, burlesque dancing and a variety of other entertainment……..Oh yeah, and there is PUNK ROCK BINGO!


Greatest Days – 15 to 19 Aug at various times

A sensational new production of Take That’s official smash hit musical Greatest Days, featuring more than 15 record-breaking Take That songs. Plus a heart-warming and hilarious story of love, loss and laughter from award-winning writer Tim Firth that will make your heart Shine.

The musical follows five boy band obsessed best friends in the 1990s, who reunite over 20 years later to see their heartthrobs one last time in what could be the Greatest Days of their life.


The Full Monty – 5-9 December

Simon Beaufoy’s heartfelt play, THE FULL MONTY arrives at Blackpool Winter Gardens in December 2023 as part of the UK tour. There are no heroes, just a group of lads trying to regain their dignity and pride. This fast and funny play is still very much of our time, as again we’re hit by a cost-of-living crisis. Gaz and his mates are down on their luck and feel they’ve been thrown on the scrap heap, but are determined to fight back and bare a little more than they ever thought they would have to.

As in the 1997 smash hit film, this brand-new production is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, laughs and heartbreak. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the film on a major national tour. Relive the music of the 90’s and have a great night out in the company of our lads as they work to put on the show of their lives.


There’s Something for Everyone at the Winter Gardens

This huge and magnificent building has 11 main separate spaces over two floors. The variety of events the Winter Gardens has to offer means there’s always something on offer for locals and visitors to the resort.

The Opera House

New, upcoming bands have played in the Opera House including the like of Little Mix. Old favourites, such as Jane McDonald and Daniel O’Donnell continue to return. Some of the world’s best bands, including Canada’s Arcade Fire, who selected the Winter Gardens as only one of three venues to play in the UK.

The Empress Ballroom

The magnificent Empress Ballroom is just as comfortable staging the World Dance Championships each year as it is hosting some of the world’s best rock and pop acts in concert.

The Winter Gardens is an incredible building with a long history. It first opened on 11 July 1878 and since then has grown and developed as an entertainment complex which mirrors the growth of the seaside town of Blackpool.

In the centre of the complex, in what’s now the coffee shop, you can see the original building around which the whole of the Winter Gardens was built.

A Perfect Venue for your Event

The Winter Gardens offers a wide variety of venues for events ranging from small private business lunches to large scale conferences.

You can also hold your wedding at the Winter Gardens. What could be better than a reception or banquet in the recently refurbished Derham Room? (below).

The main rooms include the 2,900 capacity Opera House (the largest theatre stage outside London), the grand Empress Ballroom with a capacity of 3,250 people for concerts, and the 2,600 sq metre Olympia Exhibition Hall.

Remember Illuminasia?

Illuminasia was the indoor Illuminations attraction inside the Winter Gardens. 

Always designed to be temporary, the doors finally closed on Sunday 29 October 2017.
